Mind Matters NYC

While most mentoring organizations provide one mentor for one mentee, Minds Matter mentees are provided with an entire team of highly skilled professionals from various industries. Each student is assigned to two mentors whom they meet weekly: a team leader; and SAT/ACT test preparation, writing, critical thinking, and math instructors. In addition, students are supported by volunteer program directors and counselors as well as full-time staff. This structure provides unparalleled support for our students, enabling them to benefit from collaborative learning opportunities as well as individualized attention tailored to their specific academic and social need.

The organization also thoroughly addresses their need for guidance through the college admissions and financial aid processes. As first-generation college-bound students, many of them would otherwise have little support through this complicated process. At Minds Matter, we believe that as we help our students (or mentees) earn a college education, we are also cultivating them to be the next generation of leaders.

Seo Scholars

  •   A free, eight-year, academic program that gets low-income public high school students to and through college–with a 90% college graduation rate. 100% of SEO Scholars are accepted to four-year colleges, with 85% being first-generation college graduates. More than 75% of current SEO Scholars are attending colleges and universities in top-100 U.S. News & World reporting.

In high school, SEO Scholars receive the equivalent of 2.5 years of additional English and 1.5 years of additional math instruction to close the academic and opportunity gap and graduate high school with the skills necessary to tackle college with confidence. Year after year, our Scholars match or exceed the national average SAT scores of all college-bound seniors.

In their senior year of high school, we assist our Scholars with the college application and financial aid process, providing individualized support so that each student finds their perfect fit. The High School Class of 2021 was awarded more than $6.1 million in financial aid and grants for their first year of college alone.

Once they’re enrolled in college, we continue to provide academic advising, one-on-one psycho-social support, and personalized career development, so that our Scholars meet their academic and professional goals and succeed in life. As a result, our Scholars graduate from college ready to enter the working world or pursue higher education.
